Graphic Design: Advanced
Evaluation
My
own brief consisted of a range of greetings cards designs. The project targeted
16-34 year olds and required a different style from what is already on the
market. As I finished my designs, I would like to look back and evaluate what I
have done in the last few weeks.
At
the beginning of the project I researched into illustration styles, watercolour
techniques, photography and greetings cards. First, I wanted to go for a
hand-made style and use other materials than paper. Then I researched into more
styles and found great illustrators and designers and their work that inspired
me.
I
chose the theme for my cards: wedding, new job, new home and new baby. My
target audience was 16-34 year olds, as the brief required. The brief also
accentuated the fact that women buy far more cards than men, so I chose a more
feminine style.
After
choosing my illustration style I wanted to use watercolour and experimented
with different colours and techniques. I was struggling for a while with the
decision. Then after a couple of disappointment and success I finally got my
expected result.
I
went for different sizes for each card. I decided not to include any text as it
would reduce the size of the target market and the recipients. I chose a nice
textured paper for the outside of the card mounted on a card and a more plain
paper for the inside. I also designed my own envelopes.
The
time schedule I made at the beginning of the six weeks was very helpful, but
unfortunately at the last 2 weeks I was not able to keep to it because of the
other project we were working on. However I was able to finish everything in
time.
In
my opinion, the project went well, although I had some difficulties. My
strengths are in illustration, but my weakness is that I am not always able to
realize the expected result.
